This wine is just too easy todrink! The 2005 harvest produced universally harmonious wines withgreat extract and balance. This is a wine that can be enjoyed nowor could also be laid down for another 5-7 years with no concernswhatsoever as to its survival. Drink it with smoked meats, drycheeses or solo.

History
Müller-Catoir has been owned by the same family since 1744. Thepresent owner is David Philip Catoir, who has recently hired newKellermeister Martin Franzen to craft his family's wines. Anarchitect by training, Philip marks the 9th generation of hisfamily to run the winery.

For generations, the estatewas a country home for the Huguenot family of Catoir. Their fortuneoriginated in France, where they were known for their fine leathergoods. For the first 100 years, the winery was little more than anafter-thought.

It wasn’t until the mid 1800’sthat the family’s wine-making grew to prominence, a phenomenon thatoccurred under the watchful eyes of three generations of ambitiouswomen - the great-grandmother, grandmother and mother of thepresent owner – who left a lasting influence on thisproperty.

The Estate
The wines of this estate are amongst the finest in the entireRheinpfalz region - one of Germany's largest. The estate winery isfound in the village of Haardt with an extensive view across theRhine plain. Vines cover 20 hectares, of which 70% are flat and 30%on slopes, and span a variety of soil types from heavy loam toloamy loess through gravel.

Wines
All Müller-Catoir wines are estate grown. They traditionally limitthe yield of their estate vines through winter-time pruning andsummer-time crop thinning. Harvesting is through selectivehand-harvesting instead of the more economical combine-harvester.These choices result in high-extract wines with good ripeness, goodacidity and distinctive character. Even small vintages of MüllerCatoir tend to be full-bodied and top-class.

Because grapes are alwaysharvested extremely late on this estate, the musts are cold whenthey arrive in the cellar and slow fermentation takes place with noadditional manipulations. After racking the wine off the spentyeast cells, it is not touched again until bottling. These winesoften precipitate tartrate crystals and are often just theslightest bit sparkling, so we recommend keeping them at atemperature of 50 – 55 F for at least two hours before opening.Then, pull the corks carefully and leave the bottles open for awhile to allow the full bouquet to develop.

Robert Parker 90 points: "With Rieslaner – unlike Riesling – Franzen explains, it was possible to pick out individual nobly rotten berries or partial clusters, thanks to which there is a 2006 Gimmeldinger Schlossel Rieslaner Auslese of impressive if gaudy intensity. Lychee, caramelized peach, grilled pineapple, malt, and honey inform the nose and palate. Opulent, oily, and decadently rich, for all of its caramel and butterscotch suggestions, this retains exuberant, juicy pineapple and peach fruitiness. Hints of smoke and citrus rind help counteract the sense of surplus sweetness. The acid level is extremely high on all three nobly sweet 2006 Rieslaner at this address, and they will need but also reward time spent in bottle. Drink this Auslese between 10-20 years of age.
